Got a big bore cylinder kit from alixprs but didn´t want to use any after market fuel controller for a couple of reason like to find a mounting spot, all the routing of the wires, rising the weight or to adjust the controller. I wanted this to be done only by the original ECU.
My idea was to rise the fuel pressure on the fuel pump, so more fuel gets through the little holes in the injector. But I could not find a matching pressure regulator for the Keihin fuel pump with different pressure (3,5/4/4,5 bar) to the original one with 3bar - so I did not follow this way any more. I went on with research and decided to try a bigger fuel injector instead of the original one.
The first attempt was a 330cc/min injector as this was the one I could get in short time to try. The OE one is a 220cc/min. After assembling the cylinder kit and the injector the bike starts and runs really smooth, good idling and throttle response.
Had this setup for ~3000km among others at my Balkan ride. Never had any issue with ignition, weak or bad running of the engine. Unfortunately the fuel consumption was on normal riding about 5L/100km and on full throttle highway it rises to 5,8L/100km.
This can´t be the way to go on.
It´s easy to change this little part.
Finally I got a smaller injector I ordered on eby, a 270cc/min injector and after assembling the engine still runs nice, good idling and response on throttle opening, so I kept this injector and until now - 11/2023 - I did +1800km on it, including 700 on hard adventure riding in Romania.
Fuel consumption drops to 3,7 to 4,1L/100km which is similar to the original KLX300.
In my opinion that´s a good way for the KLX 250 to gain some hp and don´t need to hassle with any adjustment or maybe do a dyno run. The power gain is really feelable and looking the costs, it´s worth to give it a try. I did it for less than €200,- and good time at assembling.
That´s the engine setup:
2009 KLX 250 DFI (EFI)
European OE ECU
original Exhaust - A/F sensor in use
Block off plate
KDX Snorkel
First plate on DFI body removed
292cc big bore cylinder kit (AHL?) €167,-
270cc/min injector Suzuki 15710-21H00 €25,-
Booster plug - as I had this before, so I did not disconnect. But I guess it is not essential for this setup.
