How can I optimize the performance of the suspension
Use the existing possibilities
that the suspension offers in terms of adjustment options and try to achieve your own needs as best as possible. Unfortunately you often read in test reports that the KLX has a fully adjustable suspension. But this is not the case.
On the fork it is only the compression damping. Spring preload and rebound damping are fixed and cannot be changed. On the shock absorber it is the compression damping, rebound damping and spring preload that can be changed without having to spend any money.
It is quite possible that you will reach the limit of the adjustment possibilities and will still be a long way from where you would like the suspension to be.
If you reach the adjustment limit
there are still a few ways to further influence the set-up at relatively low cost. A different usually harder spring can be fitted to the fork. The tuning can also be influenced by the oil viscosity and the amount of oil. However, this requires a little basic knowledge and the desire to experiment.
At the rear shock absorber the only thing that can be done in the garage at home is to change the spring and adjust it correctly. Of course it would be possible to influence the rear shock absorber by changing the linkage but in my opinion this requires more specialist knowledge and linkages are not available from every accessory dealer.
If you really want to invest money a complete fork and shock absorber replacement is the way to go. As far as I know there is unfortunately no plug-and-play aftermarket high-end fork for the KLX. The only option is to adapt a third-party fork to the KLX with a lot of effort. On the shock absorber side, there are indeed aftermarket manufacturers with very high-quality products for the KLX in their product range.
Another option is
of course to have the suspension components reworked by a specialist. With his knowledge and experience, he can conjure up your very own personal suspension. The possibilities here are relatively wide, starting with polishing the sliding tubes on the fork and piston rod on the rear shock and ending with coating with titanium nitride. The aim is to minimize the breakaway torque and thus optimize the response behavior.
It´s easy to remove the fork.
Watch how I do this.
The next step
is to adjust the spring rate of shim packages and to rework, adjust and tune the through holes, oil quantity and viscosity. This option can be a good solution, both in terms of cost and result. Considering the cost of a high-quality shock absorber it makes sense to visit a suspension specialist.
A suspension should serviced regularly
Changing the fork oil myself is not a big challenge, it is much more difficult to service a shock absorber. It makes sense to have the desired setup changes made by the specialist in the course of the service.
